ADSC prepares for ‘A Mile for a Life’ event at the NMA

On Saturday 24th July, a team from the Army Development and Selection Centre (ADSC) in Lichfield is planning to run or row a mile for the life of every British Armed Forces member who has died in Afghanistan since 2001, a figure that tragically stands at nearly 300.  As part of the Discovering Places Olympic 2012 weekend, the 20-strong team of military and civilian individuals are hoping to raise both funds and awareness during their rigorous 12 hour stint.
The event is taking place between 7am and 7pm at the National Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire, a fitting location as participants with be exercising in view of the Armed Forces Memorial, a moving and striking structure that commemorates all those who have died on duty or as a result of terrorism since the Second World War, including the current conflict in Afghanistan.
To make their task even more challenging, the runners will be carrying backpacks weighing 20 kilograms, which members of the public can try on to gauge the amount of effort it is taking.  Physical Training Instructors from the ADSC will be present to answer any questions and provide information about fitness and exercise.
Major Cooney of the ADSC said: ‘‘Our role of selecting young men and women for the British Army means that we are extremely sensitive to the ultimate sacrifice paid by our troops.  We also appreciate the importance of the Armed Forces Charities who work unceasingly to raise money and support our soldiers and their families.  Through ‘A Mile for a Life’ we can contribute to that effort, spurred on by the memory of those of whom we are so very proud”.

The proceeds from the event are being donated equally to the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal and the National Memorial Arboretum, charities whose work honours the fallen, recognises service, suffering and sacrifice and fosters pride in our country.

About the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal
